HOTEL AND CATERING
LOCAL COURSE: TOURIST HOTELS
The Aim of the Course
The course provides a wide knowledge about hotel management, kitchen work, and also other services as well as tourism and the work of a courier. It will provide you with the knowledge to be able to perform most of the tasks required in a tourist hotel and even an overview of how to run your own business.
The contents of the course in the hotel and catering programme
In Leksand, we have a catering program. This is a special branch of studies which is only found in a few places in the country.
All of the students study, for the three years of their course hotel management, catering and customer service.
Students also learn about customer psychology, tourism, courier service, economy and running a small business.
In the final year you will have the opportunity to specialise and concentrate on the practical side of your education (APU).
The school is a member of the AEHT and because of its links with this international organisation, we can provide assistance in finding excellent places abroad to do your work experience. We are also trying to establish links and exchanges with International schools.
In order to work as closely as possible to the tourism industry, the school involves students to organise different trips - both long and short. Normally during these trips the students act as guides and couriers.
During the third year of the course we follow the flow of the tourist activities which are organised round Lake Siljan, for example activities planned by the Marketing Company "Siljan Turism" and the events surrounding the famous Ski Race" Vasa Race", which attracts thousands of spectators every year.

Gästis - Catering School
The school is situated in the buildings of "Gästis" , which formally was a famous inn, with links to the seventeenth century, and has been fully restored and refurbished.
On arrival you come to the Front Desk which is equipped in a modern style. Adjacent to this is the bar and two dining rooms and a function room which is called the Ankacrona Room after the famous Gustaf Ankarcrona (1869-1933) who was a regular visitor to Gästis at that time.
The Danish author H C Andersen stayed in Gästis in 1849 and his name has been given to one of the rooms on the First Floor. Another room bears the name of Maria Alfvén, wife of the composer Hugo Alfvén. The rooms are used for training the skills of running a hotel. The classroom which is decorated with tiled stoves together with the large veranda can be used as conference.
In the new building, we find the modern kitchen, classrooms and a common room. Two paintings by the artist Lasse Lindqvist which present the value of the tourist traditions and the culinary culture of Leksand are also there.
The restaurant is open some days every week. The local people and visitors can go there and eat lunch or take a candle-lit dinner and enjoy the good food. Students in traditional serving uniforms serve at table the food which their fellow-students have prepared in the kitchen.
Since the opening of the school, several famous personalities have visited "Gästis"- these include the former Minister of Culture Bengt GöranssonThe school's policy is to invite at least one well-known person to the school every year.
Leksand's Sixth-form college (Senior High)
Before 1995 Leksand's Sixth form College was a vocational college offering courses in Mechanics, Electrical Studies, Business studies, Hotel and Catering and Office Management. In 1995 the school moved to new purpose-built buildings and with a new face.
Now the college is preparing students to meet the challenges of the IT society of the future. The college offers courses in Natural Sciences, Chemistry, Physics and Technology. There are even courses available for those working with leisure science. Within the media branch there is a course covering information and advertising. There are still courses for business studies and economics but something new are the music and aesthetics courses. The Hotel and Restaurant school has a local bias tourist hotels- which is very important bearing in mind the importance of the tourist industry in this area.
With regard to vocational studies we now have a course available in creative carpentry. Handcraft and wood-working are deeply rooted in this region and it is hoped that this course with further the development of the entire area..
